Remote Learning

In March 2020, Behind the Book pivoted to remote learning. With some adaptations, we found that our programs were well-suited to virtual learning. BtB continued to prove essential for both teachers and students through the difficult FY21 school year. This year, we are back in classrooms and serving students through a hybrid model, with most of our authors visiting classes virtually.

Digital Books: Books were given out through an adaptive digital reading platform that lets students annotate, highlight, and react with emoji’s, enabling them to interact with each other. Teachers could also see students’ progress. For English language learners and Special Ed classes, the interactive elements of this virtual platform proved to be particularly useful.

Vocabulary Videos: We created vocabulary videos from the text which were particularly helpful for English language learners and students with learning issues.

Art & Program Materials: Art projects were designed around materials found at home and continued to enhance the understanding of the text. Early on we brought the outside in by delivering project-based materials to students to provide real-world learning from home.

Authors: We were able to work with authors from all over the country, giving us a larger group of authors of color from whom we could choose. This gave us options we hadn’t considered before and we will continue to work with some authors remotely.

Special Guests: We supplemented author workshops with special visitors who had expertise in the themes of the texts including a microbiologist and a food activist. We will continue to enhance programs with experts in order to deepen student knowledge and expose them to subject areas as well as new career paths.
