There is a literacy crisis in our schools and in our society. The number of children who read for enjoyment is lower than it has been since that metric was first recorded. Behind the Book is the only literacy organization in NYC focused on increasing young people’s internal motivation to read and write. Every dollar donated helps ensure our programs are reaching the students who need them the most. 

Behind the Book provides our literacy engagement programs to school and community partners at a small fraction of the cost to run them. We can’t do it without your help.

What your donation will support:

  • $10,700 funds a complete classroom program with a published student anthology

  • $3,900 brings an author to 5 classrooms for an inspiring visit

  • $1,080 will fund new books for 2 classrooms in an under-resourced school

  • $500 brings an art workshop to 5 classrooms

  • $360 funds new books for an entire classroom in an under-resourced school

  • $100 brings an art workshop to a class of 20 students
