From L to R: Emanuel Xavier, Mayda Del Valle, and Staceyann Chin
On Friday, February 12th 2010, Behind the Book hosted LOUDER THAN WORDS: A Spoken Word and Music Benefit at Bowery Poetry Club.
Over 100 guests came out to witness spectacular performances by the best in poetry and music. Behind the Book was honored to present acclaimed poets, Staceyann Chin and Emanuel Xavier as the evening’s featured artists. A variety of celebrated writers and musicians, including Samantha Thornhill, Rich Villar, Akili Jamal Haynes, and our students from De Witt Clinton High School joined Chin and Xavier to create an unforgettable night in support of Behind the Book.
Six lucky guests won a free hour open bar for 20+ guests at Side Bar, tickets to Fuerza Bruta, tickets to the musical comedy-Dear Edwina, a $50 Gift Certificate to Crumbs Bakeshop, a $50 Gift Certificate to Opal Bar and Restaurant, and "Our Angels Have Wings Too" T-shirt from Emanuel Xavier.
All of the proceeds from the event are going towards Behind the Book's programs this year, providing curriculum-integrated literacy programs to students in NYC public schools.
